Fire was commissioned by the 60th International Thessaloniki Film Festival. Irini Karayannopoulou was invited to create a work after watching Fire Will Come, the award winning film by Oliver Laxe. The film explores the depths of a forest on fire and the destiny of a Galician arsonist who is accused of causing it. In Irini’s large scale painting, a woman kneels in front of burning candles. The artist paints directly on a found photograph, enabling an outdated, transformed image to travel through time and space, much like the primordial force of fire.
The exhibition took place at MOMus Museum in the port of Thessaloniki.
